Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
