The UK and US have announced a key trade agreement that will keep no duties on UK drug products going into the US market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has pledged to increase expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This commitment ensures that import taxes on these crucial products will remain at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This development follows previous threats to significantly raise duties on patented drug products, with figures mentioned as high as double the cost.

"This deal with the Britain strengthens the international landscape for innovative medicines and establishes long-overdue fairness to transatlantic drug exports," an announcement said.

Trade Importance

Drugs represent one of the Britain's most significant export categories to the United States, which is easily the biggest market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures show that in the year leading up to the third quarter, the UK exported pharmaceutical products valued at £11.1bn to the US. This value made up 17.4% of all goods exports in that period.

"This agreement protects work, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," a government official remarked.

Key NHS Changes

The pact includes several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it deems new therapies to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to double total public funding on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at fifteen percent. Previously, rebates topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal follows a ongoing tension between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over drug pricing and regulatory access.

This friction were heightened by assertions that US consumers were paying significantly more for the equivalent treatments than people in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or scrapped, while major expansions have been announced toward American operations.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS must invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its resources over the past decade.
